7 Ways to Stay Healthy While Traveling
Traveling is one of our favorite things to do and this year more than ever I feel like we are constantly jet setting to new places. Between work trips, vacations, and visiting family we've spent more time on the road than we have at home.
But with so much travel comes the responsibility of staying healthy.
Between planes, trains, and automobiles germs are EVERYWHERE. Not to mention the new allergens, climates, and food - new destinations can be pretty dangerous to productivity.
We've compiled 7 Tips & Tricks to staying Healthy While Traveling.
1. Wear a Scarf on a Plane
No matter the time of year I always wear a scarf on a plane. I've found that using it as a makeshift mask helps keep germs out of my lungs and aids in uncomfortable, dry airplane sleep. Not to mention shielding you from any unwanted smells that may be lingering on that sardine can in the sky.
. Vitamin Up
efore you even get to the airport start taking Vitamin C - B-12, or drinking your juice. By boosting your immune system you're giving it a jumpstart for crazy schedules, new environments, and of course all the people you'll come in contact with.
3. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is Key! Make sure you're chugging water throughout your entire trip. This helps flush toxins from your body while being hydrated keeps energy levels up.
I also try my best to avoid alcohol when I travel. If I do drink its one drink here or there.
4. Super Foods
You don't always have to eat out on vacation. Stop at a grocery store on your way to your Air BnB or hotel and grab some healthy snacks for on the go. Granola bars, carrot sticks, and organic, healthy snacks will help keep you from eating as much junk food and keep your body healthy.
Also when you do go out to eat make smart choices. Choose veggies over fries. Water over alcohol or soft drinks. This will save money as well as keep you in tip top shape.
I know - Who wants to miss a moment of your trip/vacation/work but sleep is so important. If you've ever seen my Travel Guides you know I pack in quite a lot into my trips but I still try to get 8 hours of sleep and take a quick nap in the middle of the day (especially if I changed time zones)
If you start missing sleep it will really wear you down and make recovery when you get back home so much harder.
6. Protect Yourself
You cannot wash your hands enough! I bring a travel pack with me in my bag that has sunscreen, baby wipes, and hand sanitizer. I try to wash my hands right before I eat and I hand sanitize anytime I get off public transit, touch a door handle, or touch anything else I know a million other people have touched. It might be a little overkill but it works for me.
Also even if you're not a ginger you should be sunscreening up! The sun can take a lot out of you and even if you tan that's still forcing your body to work extra hard. Give your body a break and apply sunscreen every few hours.
Traveling in itself is stressful so try to keep added stress to a minimum. Put your email on snooze and have dedicated work hours. In between try to relax by listening to music, reading a book, or lounging by that hotel pool. These little breaks allow you to enjoy your time away.
